The true meaning of “Landslide”

Before joining Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks was apart of a duet with Lindsey Buckingham, which was called Buckingham NicksWhile visiting Aspen, Colorado, Stevie Nicks had started to write Landslide, with inspiration from the nearby scenery.

“looking out at the Rocky Mountains pondering the avalanche of everything that had come crashing down on us … at that moment, my life truly felt like a landslide in many ways”

Buckingham Nicks was almost at the end of its road. The duet hadn’t seen much success. Polydor Records dropped Buckingham Nicks. To make matters worse, Stevie and Lindsey weren’t getting along. All of that was about to change.

During the year 1975, British blues band Fleetwood Mac relocated to the United States from England. They had high hopes of success, but ended up losing guitarists as if they were dropping like flies.

Former guitarist Bob Welch had left Fleetwood Mac and left the band in a troubled state. Drummer Mick Fleetwood had begun searching for a new guitarist and recording studio. He happened to be very lucky by finding both!

At the studio, Mick Fleetwood requested to hear musical works that were produced there. As a sample, the producer played music from Buckingham Nicks. Mick Fleetwood was astounded by the sound of the guitar in the music. As a result, Mick Fleetwood invited guitarist Lindsey Buckingham to join Fleetwood Mac as the new guitarist. However, Lindsey would only join if Stevie was invited also. Mick had agreed to invite both Lindsey and Stevie, but felt Stevie would not be a big impact on the band. To this day, he regrets ever doubting Stevie.

Fleetwood Mac and its new band members had produced the 1975 Fleetwood Mac album. It became a huge success, especially with Stevie’s contribution to the album with Landslide.

Now that you know a litte history of Buckingham Nicks and Fleetwood Mac, you can understand the true meaning of the song Landslide. In life, you will follow many different paths, and make many different decisions. Stevie Nicks had to make one of the biggest decisions of her life… should she continue her music career? Life for her at the time was like a landslide. Everything kept going downhill. Fast forward to the present day, and both Stevie and Lindsey are rocking out on stage with Fleetwood Mac. This goes to show that anything is possible as long as you try and make the right decisions.
